BMW i8 Spyder reportedly delayed until 2017 or 2018
Fans have been clamoring for a production version of the BMW i8 Spyder concept but it appears they will have to wait a little longer.
According to Motoring's sources, the production model has been delayed and won't arrive until 2017 or 2018. The publication goes onto say there will no new BMW i models introduced this year and the i8 Spyder could be beaten to market by the i5 which is slated to be introduced next year.
There's no word on what is responsible for the delay but speculation suggests the i8 wasn't originally designed to be a roadster or the company is waiting to upgrade the model so it has the same powertrain as the i8 Safety Car from Formula E.
Of course, there could also be a simpler explanation as one senior insider told the publication "The i8 is selling well enough now, so the lineup doesn’t strictly need it." The unnamed employee also noted the i8 Spyder is coming, just more slowly than expected as "... it’s not all we are doing.”
The i8 Spyder concept was originally introduced in 2012 but BMW recently unveiled an updated version of the concept at the Consumer Electronics Show.
