Toyota S-FR concept arrives in Tokyo ahead of next year’s rumored launch
After an online reveal a few weeks ago, the Toyota S-FR concept has made its debut in the metal today at the 44th Tokyo Motor Show.
The goofy-looking concept is cute in its own way and its near-production appearance is believed to materialize sometime next year when the model will allegedly hit the assembly line according to various reports. Toyota still isn’t saying what powers the concept, but the latest gossip indicates it has an inline-four 1.5-liter gasoline engine sourced from the Corolla (JDM), only this time with direct injection and a series of other tweaks to boost output to 130 PS (96 kW) and 148 Nm (109 lb-ft).
That doesn’t sound very impressive, but keep in mind sources close to Toyota are saying the concept weighs as little as 980 kg (2,160 lbs), so it should turn out to be a feisty machine. Add into the mix a six-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive, and you have the necessary ingredients for an affordable fun little car. Speaking of being affordable, word on the street says it will be the equivalent of $10,000 cheaper in Japan than the locally sold Mazda MX-5.
It’s bound to get a front & rear double wishbone suspension and is expected to retain the concept’s size: 3990 mm length, 1695 mm width and 1320 mm height, with a 2480 mm wheelbase. Those of you who were hoping for an automatic transmission are out of luck as the S-FR won’t get one, at least not in its domestic market. The international version could use a different engine and will likely be badged as a Scion in United States, but a production variant hasn’t been confirmed just yet so we will have to wait for an announcement from Toyota which hopefully will occur in the near future.
