Lotus says their first ever crossover will be a global model, but China will get it first

Lotus has announced their crossover is being developed as a global model, but initially it will be offered only in China where it will be locally produced.

 

The first high-riding model to wear the Lotus badge is scheduled to come out in 2020 and aims to be better than a Porsche Macan. Company CEO Jean-Marc Gales told Automobile Magazine that it will be the first lightweight model in its class and unlike most of its rivals which are based on cars, the Lotus model is being engineered from the ground up as a crossover. Production will take place in China where Lotus has a joint venture with Goldstar Industrial, but Gales promises it will be "a Lotus built according to Lotus standards."

 

When asked whether it will have a three- or five-door layout, the Lotus boss said they are working on possible designs for the model but most definitely it will come with rear doors. The engineers are prioritizing a lightweight construction and according to previous reports the crossover will be around 200 kg (440 lbs) lighter than segment competitors such as the Porsche Macan S which tips the scales at 1,865 kg (4,111 lbs).

 

Following its launch in China in 2020, the yet unnamed Lotus crossover will be exported to international markets.
