Aston Martin announces 800 bhp electric Rapide coming in two years
Aston Martin has disclosed plans to launch a pure electric Rapide in about two years.
This isn't the first time we are hearing about AM's plans for a zero-emission Rapide, but now company CEO Andy Palmer has told Automotive News during Pebble Beach the all-electric sedan is being developed and will be launched in around two years. He went on to specify the vehicle will employ an all-wheel drive setup and is going to provide a combined output of approximately 800 bhp (597 kW).
The battery pack will be sourced from LG or Samsung and will provide enough juice for an estimated range of 200 miles (322 km). Andy Palmer hinted the electrified Rapide S will cost in the $200,000 to $250,000 range and will be a true Aston Martin without any parts sourced from Mercedes-AMG. The plan is to make hundreds of units each year and they have already commenced work with test mules.
It won't remain Aston Martin's only pure electric vehicle for a long time as the company has plans to introduce an EV version of the DBX crossover, but that will probably happen around 2020 or 2021 since initially the model will be offered as a plug-in hybrid due in 2019, followed by a conventionally-powered version and then by the EV.
