2016 Mercedes GLC officially unveiled
Mercedes has officially unveiled the 2016 GLC.
Set to replace the slab-sided GLK, the GLC adopts a curvaceous body that follows in the footsteps of the entry-level GLA. The similarities won't please everyone but buyers looking for something more distinctive can opt for either the AMG or Off-Road styling package.
The interior largely carries over from the C-Class and features a modern design with high quality materials. Notable highlights include a stylish dashboard and center console as well as an infotainment system with either a 7- or 8.4-inch display. Customers can also order an assortment of upholstery - including fabric, ARTICO, DINAMICA, leather or nappa leather - as well as a panoramic glass roof and aluminum, carbon fiber or wood trim.
Since the GLC has a wheelbase that is 118mm longer than the GLK, rear seat passengers are treated to additional legroom and larger door openings that improve entry and exit. The model also has a more accommodating cargo compartment that holds up to 1600 liters (56.5 cubic feet) of luggage.
As before, there's a variety of variants including:
A GLC 220 d 4MATIC with 170 PS (125 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque
A GLC 250 d 4MATIC with 204 PS (150 kW) and 500 Nm (368 lb-ft) of torque
A GLC 250 4MATIC with 211 PS (155 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque
There's also a new GLC 350 e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid which uses a 211 PS (155 kW) petrol engine and a 116 PS (85 kW) electric motor. This setup enables the crossover to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, hit a top speed of 235 km/h (146 mph) and travel up to 34 km (21.1 miles) on electricity alone.
American consumers, on the other hand, will receive the GLC 300 and GLC 300 4MATIC which feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 241 bhp (179 kW) and 273 lb-ft (369 Nm) of torque.
Speaking of performance, the 2016 GLC weighs 80 kg (176 lbs) less than the GLK thanks to an intelligent mix of materials including aluminum as well as high- and ultra-high-strength steels.
