More powerful BMW i8 believed to be on track for 2016 release, won't have M badge
UK media is reporting BMW will unveil a more powerful version of the i8 in 2016.
BMW M ruled out any involvement in a hypothetical beefed up i8 last year, but that doesn't mean the hybrid sportscar can't get a more powerful sibling. Citing company insiders, Auto Express says a higher specification i8 is currently in the works and will be out as soon as next year with more power and roughly the same 1,485 kg (3,273 lbs) weight.
The more potent version is bound to lose the three-cylinder, 1.5-liter turbo in favor of a larger four-cylinder, 2.0-liter gasoline engine. This new motor is believed to develop more than 300 bhp (224 kW) and together with the standard electric motor will bump combined output to approximately 450 bhp (336 kW), thus making it almost 100 bhp (75 kW) more powerful than the regular i8.
The report goes on to specify the added weight of the larger engine will be offset by a stripped-out two-seater interior cabin and unpainted carbon fiber body panels. By adding more power and trying to keep the weight intact, BMW's engineers are expected to lower the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint time of the i8 from 4.4 seconds to less than 4 seconds.
Tentatively called BMW i8S, the hotter derivative of the hybrid sportscar could serve as the company's rumored 100th anniversary special model.
