Mercedes to launch new ten plug-in hybrids by 2017

Mercedes has announced plans to launch ten new plug-in hybrids by 2017.

 

The company was coy on specifics but confirmed plans to offer plug-in hybrid powertrains on models from the "C-Class upwards." The automaker also stated a plug-in hybrid variant of the GLE is coming "soon."

 

The remaining models are shrouded in secrecy but could include the GLC, GLE Coupe, GLS and next-generation E-Class. Mercedes also hinted they could offer a production version of the Concept V-ision which recently debuted at the Geneva Motor Show.

 

In a statement, Mercedes development boss Prof Dr Thomas Weber said "Plug-in hybrids offer our customers the best of both worlds; in the city they can drive in all-electric mode, while on long journeys they benefit from the combustion engine's range. In addition, hybridization makes the combustion engine more efficient and brings with it a special type of dynamic performance - making driving an absolute pleasure."
