2016 Volkswagen Touran render shows what to expect

The 2016 Volkswagen Touran has been speculatively rendered ahead of an official premiere likely occurring in September at IAA in Frankfurt.

 

The compact MPV will likely grow in size a little bit but that won't increase weight as the model will ride on the MQB platform so it could actually turn out to be lighter by 100 kg (220 lbs) than the outgoing model.

 

The boxy look will be largely retained which should come as a surprise taking into account this shape enables a roomy interior which is exactly what buyers prioritize when searching for a new MPV. A stretched wheelbase will grant more room for passengers sitting on the rear seats while the bigger tailgate will enable easier cargo manipulation.

 

Front-wheel drive will be standard but select models are going to be offered with an optional 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. The engine and gearbox offerings will largely be carried over from the Golf while later during the car's lifespan there could be a Cross Touran with a more rugged body, standard AWD and an increased ride height.
