2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid unveiled, returns 42 mpg combined

Hyundai's green theme continues as the company has taken the wraps off the 2016 Sonata Hybrid.

 

Set to go on sale this summer, the car has a familiar appearance but adopts the same aerodynamic styling tweaks as the Sonata Plug-in Hybrid. As a result, there's modified bumpers, new front fenders and a revised grille - among other things.

 

The cabin largely carries over but there's a new instrument cluster that provides hybrid-specific driving information. More importantly, the car's battery is now located underneath the trunk floor so the 2016 Sonata Hybrid has newly optional split-folding rear seats and a best-in-class cargo capacity of 13.3 cubic feet (376 liters).

 

A 2.0-liter GDI four-cylinder engine resides under the hood and produces 154 bhp (115 kW) and 140 lb-ft (190 Nm) of torque. It is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission with an integrated 51 bhp (38 kW) electric motor that is powered by a 1.62 kWh lithium-polymer battery. This enables the car to produce a combined output of 193 bhp (144 kW) and return an estimated fuel economy rating of 39 mpg city / 44 mpg highway / 42 mpg combined.
