General Motors has revealed some new details about the Dynamic Skip Fire system that is described as a "revolutionary new fuel economy technology" that could be deployed in future petrol-powered models.
Developed by Tula Technology, the Dynamic Skip Fire system "integrates advanced digital signal processing with sophisticated powertrain controls to create a software-based approach to variable displacement engines."
While that sounds like a lot of techno-babble, GM says the system is like an advanced cylinder deactivation system. As the automaker explains, the Dynamic Skip Fire system "continuously makes dynamic firing decisions on an individual cylinder basis to deliver the required engine torque for all vehicle speeds and loads while avoiding vibration."
The system is still being developed but tests have shown fuel economy gains of up to 15 percent.
