All-wheel drive Ford Focus RS arrives in Geneva with drift button and launch control
The much awaited Ford Focus RS hot hatchback has made been introduced this week in Geneva ahead of next year's market launch.
Ford has prepared some massive upgrades for the third generation Focus RS which for the first time in the model's existence is going to feature an all-wheel drive layout. Power comes from the Mustang's 2.3-liter 4-cylinder EcoBoost turbocharged gasoline engine outputting more than 315 bhp (235 kW) while torque has increased compared to the pony car's 433 Nm (320 lb-ft).
Performance figures are not available at this point but the Blue Oval company says the new Focus RS will be available with a launch control function and there's also going to be a drift button although Ford has not provided any details yet about what it actually does. They did say the hot hatch will offer "unique drift capability" as well as "class-leading cornering speed" while the AWD system will make use of two electronically-controlled clutch packs installed on each side of the rear drive unit (RDU) which acts basically like a limited slip differential.
The RDU system is capable of monitoring road conditions 100x per second and will deliver up to 70 percent of the torque to the rear axle, with as much as 100 percent of the available torque being channeled to one of the rear wheels. The 2016 Focus RS will come equipped with a six-speed manual transmission sending power to all four 19-inch lightweight alloys shod in Michelin Pilot Super Sport 235/35 R19 tires while Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires will be optionally available.
Scheduled to enter production towards the end of the year, the new Ford Focus RS will go on sale next spring.
