Eighth generation Volkswagen Golf could come in 2017
German media is reporting Volkswagen will introduce the eighth generation Golf as early as 2017.
Earlier this month we heard the Volkswagen Golf VIII will be out in 2019 but now Auto Motor und Sport says the model is going to be introduced in 2017, just five years after the current generation was unveiled. It will allegedly be lower and wider than the Golf VII and will adopt a significantly different styling which will include brand new headlights and taillights clusters.
It will continue to ride on the MQB platform but will benefit from a significant 50 kg (110 lbs) weight reduction which will be matched with more efficient engines, including a three-cylinder borrowed from the facelifted Polo. It should be mentioned the report doesn't specify whether it’s the 1.4-liter diesel (offered with 74 / 89 / 104 bhp) or the 1.0-liter gasoline (89 bhp).
The 2017 Golf will allegedly receive the bigger infotainment systems from the Passat and will come with a head-up display and the possibility of using the touchscreen display to control smartphone apps. In addition, expect a wide array of safety equipment such as automatic parking and braking (with pedestrian recognition) sourced from the all-new Passat.
As previously reported, rumours suggest electric turbochargers, coasting technology and a flywheel system could be incorporated while the base model should have a curb weight of less than 1,100 kg (2,425 lbs). Lastly, some of the aerodynamic tweaks implemented in the ultra-frugal XL1 will be carried over onto the next Golf as a method to meet the upcoming stringent CO2 emissions restrictions set to be implemented by the European Union in 2020.
