2014 Peugeot 108 introduced, will be offered as a convertible
Peugeot has officially revealed the all-new 108 which for the first time will be offered as a convertible.
The cute French city car aims to be one of the lightest vehicles in this segment with a curb weight starting at just 840 kg (1,851 lbs). It will be sold not only as a three- and five-door hatchback, but also as a cabrio (called 108 TOP!) with a retractable fabric roof similar to the one installed on the Citroen DS3 Cabrio and the more recent third-gen Renault Twingo.
Compared to the outgoing model, the new 108 looks a lot more refined and upmarket thanks to the many styling cues taken from the 308. The vehicle is 3.47m long and 1.62m wide while the fabric roof of the convertible is 76cm long and 80cm wide. Peugeot has equipped the open-air version with an aero-acoustic deflector which automatically deploys in order to diminish cabin turbulence.
Powering the fresh 108 are frugal three-cylinder engines starting out with a 1.0-liter e-VTi delivering 68 bhp (51 kW) to the front wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. The same engine can be had with a stop/start system to cut down CO2 emissions and also with an automatic transmission. There's also a larger 1.2-liter PureTech VTi outputting 82 bhp (61 kW) and mated to a five-speed manual.
Depending on the selected trim, the 2014 Peugeot 108 will ride on 14-inch alloy wheels shod in 165/65 R14 ultra-low rolling resistance tires or 15-inch rims wrapped around in 165/60 R15 rubbers. All versions come as standard with a hill start assist system along with an indirect tire under-inflation system. Stopping power is provided by 247mm front ventilated discs and 200mm rear drums, as well as systems such as ABS, Emergency Collision Braking System, switchable ESP and Electronic Brake Force Distribution.
At this moment we don't have photos of the interior but according to Peugeot the cabin has a height-adjustable driver's seat, automatic air conditioning and a seven-inch touchscreen display. Also inside is the firm's Open and Go system, six airbags, electric power steering along with the electronic control switch for the retractable soft top.
The 2014 Peugeot 108 will get its first public outing next month at the Geneva Motor Show and is slated to go on sale in the UK on July 1st.
