BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe officially revealed, looks like a sleeker 3-Series sedan with rear hatch
BMW has officially taken the wraps off the 4-Series Gran Coupe which will be shown in public next month at the Geneva Motor Show.
The vehicle shares its length (4638mm), width (1825mm) and wheelbase (2810mm) with the two-door 4-Series Coupe but the roof is 112mm longer and sits 12mm higher to provide a smoother and sleeker appearance. It looks slightly better than the 3-Series sedan and adopts a hatchback configuration which should provide an easier access to the cargo compartment that can hold 480 liters, making it 35 liters more spacious than what its two-door sibling has to offer. Fold down the rear seats and you get 1,300 liters of load capacity.
Aside from the minor exterior changes, the 4-Series Gran Coupe is pretty much the same as the 3-Series Sedan / 4-Series Coupe from where it borrows the engine lineup. The 428i is powered by a 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine with 240 bhp (179 kW) and 255 lb-ft (345 Nm) which is enough to enable a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint in 5.7 seconds. Select the 435i and you get a six-cylinder 3.0-liter rated at 300 bhp (224 kW) and 300 lb-ft (406 Nm) that will run the sprint in 4.9 seconds.
Europeans can also order a 420i model with 181 bhp (135 kW) coming from a 2.0-liter turbo, as well as a 418d and 420d with 141 bhp (105 kW) and 181 bhp (135 kW) provided by a four-cylinder turbocharged 2.0-liter motor. BMW plans on adding more diesel engines for the European 4-Series Gran Coupe in the near future.
Scheduled to go on sale this summer, the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe kicks off at 41,225 USD for the 428i model. Opt for the 428i xDrive and the price jumps to 42,225 USD whereas the 435i is available for 46,725 USD and can only be had with rear-wheel drive. Regardless of engine and traction choice, the U.S.-spec model will be sold exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
