2014 Volkswagen Polo facelift revealed with new and updated three-cylinder engines
Volkswagen has revealed a mid-cycle facelift for Polo which will make its public debut in March at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.
Exterior changes are not something to write home about but we do notice a slightly reworked front bumper and an updated grille with horizontal lines. The shape of the headlights has remained unchanged but upper-spec models now come with LED technology for the main beam function. At the back there is a lightly revised bumper featuring a wider cutout for the license plate, along with updated taillights featuring different graphics.
By far the most important modifications can be found under the hood where Volkswagen has added three 1.4-liter 3-cylinder diesel engines outputting 74 bhp (55 kW), 89 bhp (66 kW) and 104 bhp (77 kW). These will serve as replacements for the 90 bhp 1.2-liter as well as for the 4-cylinder 1.6-liter previously offered with 89 bhp (66 kW) and 104 bhp (77 kW).
The 74 bhp diesel powers the frugal Polo TDI BlueMotion and offers a peak torque of 155 lb-ft (210 Nm) at 1,500 rpm for a model which delivers 73.5 mpg US (88.3 mpg UK or 3.2 liters / 100 km) in the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 82 g/km. The 89 bhp variant returns 69.2 mpg US (83.1 mpg UK or 3.4 liters / 100 km) and 89 g/km which makes it 21 percent more economical than the aforementioned 1.6-liter motor.
As far as gasoline engines are concerned, Volkswagen is introducing a 3-cylinder 1.0-liter turbo with 89 bhp for the Polo TSI BlueMotion where it returns 57.3 mpg US (68.9 mpg UK or 4.1 liters / 100 km) and 94 g/km. The base 1.2-liter 3-cylinder naturally-aspirated with 59 bhp (44 kW) has been updated and is now 21 percent more fuel efficient thanks to the implementation of brake energy recuperation and stop/start. The motor is also offered with 74 bhp (55 kW) which makes it 5 bhp (4 kW) more powerful than previous version.
The facelifted Polo can also be had with an updated 3-cylinder 1.2-liter TSI offered with 89 bhp (66 kW) and 108 bhp (80 kW). The GT variant now packs an extra 10 bhp (7 kW) so it delivers 148 bhp (110 kW) from a 4-cylinder 1.4-liter engine equipped with cylinder on demand technology. The range-topping Polo GTI comes with an uprated 4-cylinder 1.4-liter delivering an additional 12 bhp (9 kW) for a grant total of 189 bhp (141 kW).
Depending on the engine choice, the 2014 Volkswagen Polo can be configured with five- and six-speed manual gearboxes as well as a dual-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission. Customers can select from a wide array of alloy wheels in sizes ranging from 15 to 17 inches while depending on selected trim there are 15 exterior paint schemes offered.
