Kia GT4 Stinger concept powers into Detroit with RWD and 315 bhp
Kia is pleasantly shocking the Detroit crowd with its GT4 Stinger concept which was unveiled today, following several leaks and teaser pics.
The GT4 Stinger is an interesting rear-wheel drive 2+2 sports coupe described by Kia Design Center America chief designer Tom Kearns as having a "totally selfish design."
Its heart and soul is a 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injected gasoline T-GDI engine delivering no less than 315 bhp (235 kW) to the rear wheels via a six-speed close-ratio manual transmission.
Its tiger nose grille is one of the very few similarities with production models because other than that the car looks unique with its long hood, low vertical headlights (with LED DRLs), bulging wheel arches and see-through A-pillars. LED technology was also used for the taillights where we also find the dual exhaust arrangement as well as a glass hatch.
The concept wears an Ignition Yellow exterior paint scheme and benefits from a custom chassis with an independent double wishbone suspension. It's 169.7 inches long and has a 103.1-inch wheelbase while the width stands at 74.4 inches. The sloping roofline has made the concept only 49.2 inches tall and according to Kia the concept weighs 2,874 lbs (1,303 kg), with 52 percent of the weight being at the front. It rides on bespoke 20-inch alloy center-lock wheels covered in Pirelli P Zero tires measuring 235/35 ZR20 on all four corners.
Step inside the minimalistic cabin and you will immediately notice the billet-aluminum door handles with red-stitched pull straps and also the race-like bucket seats. There's a flat-bottomed steering wheel and a red LED illuminated panel while instead of having a carpet, the concept has received a rubber floor mat underneath the billet-aluminum pedals.
Obviously, a production version of the concept is highly unlikely to come in the near future but Kia might have plans for a rear-wheel drive coupe which could turn out to be an appealing alternative.
