Next Toyota Land Cruiser losing V8
Toyota has major mechanical changes in store for the next-generation Land Cruiser, according to a recent report.
In most markets, including the United States, the Land Cruiser has offered a V8 engine for over two decades. The next-generation model expected to arrive around the turn of the coming decade will surf the industry's downsizing wave, Japanese magazine Best Car reports. It will instead receive the same twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter V6 engine found under the hood of the Lexus LS.
The six-cylinder makes 416 horsepower in the LS. It will be de-tuned for use in the Land Cruiser, though it's too early to tell how much power it will offer. That will be the SUV's first and most basic engine option. The second, optional choice will be a gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrain -- a first for the nameplate -- built around a separate 3.5-liter V6. It's the same basic technology found in the LS Hybrid. It's safe to assume the setup will provide a few miles of electric-only driving to satisfy zero-emissions regulations in markets like China.
Fear not: downsizing is the only concession the next Land Cruiser will make in the name of modernity. It will retain the rugged body-on-frame architecture it has always used and its dimensions will remain roughly the same. No one knows where Toyota will take the design, though.
Best Car learned the next-generation Land Cruiser will begin arriving in showrooms in the summer of 2020, meaning it could make its official debut late next year. Toyota hasn't commented on the report, so we'll have to wait to find out what the future holds for one of the industry's most revered off-roaders.
