BMW Boss Confirms M8's Arrival In 2018

BMW chairman Harald Krüger has now confirmed that the range-topping version of the 8 Series will premiere in 2018. Until now, speculation suggested the road-going M8’s unveiling in 2019.

Powertrain details about both the 8 Series and M8 remain scant. The biturbo 4.4-liter V8 from the M5 is a likely engine choice, though. With 600 hp and 553 pound-feet of torque, the mill’s output would be plenty to move the big coupe.

Unfortunately, spy photos indicate that the road-going 8 Series loses much of the concept's edgy styling. Rather than the aggressive inlets and sharp lines, the test mules look bland with their rounder shapes. We can't make a final judgement until the camouflage comes off, though. A high-horsepower, luxury coupe with a steep price will be sure to be a niche product in the BMW lineup. The German brand’s mainstream future will involve extensive electrification, according to Krüger. By 2025, the company’s lineup will include 25 electrified models, including 12 full EVs. These will include an electric Mini in 2019, X3 in 2020, and iNext in 2021.
