2019 Subaru Ascent Arrives With New Turbo Engine, Seating For 8
After multiple concepts and plenty of rumors, the Subaru Ascent three-row SUV is finally here. Featuring chiseled styling and a new 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine, the automaker gives the big vehicle tools to succeed in a different segment for the brand.
As the largest Subaru ever, the Ascent’s design takes cues from the current Forester but toughens up the look by using bigger, brawnier lines particularly around the fenders. The 113.8-inch wheelbase makes the SUV just an inch longer than a Ford Explorer, and at 196.8 inches in total, the Subie is around two inches shorter overall than its Ford competitor. The Ascent rides on a revised version of the Subaru Global Platform that’s already underneath the Impreza and Crosstrek. This application features stiffened joints, which Subaru reports lower noise, vibration and harshness in the cabin.
Under the hood, buyers get the company’s new 2.4-liter turbocharged, direct-injected boxer four-cylinder engine. It produces 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. An updated version of Subie’s CVT features a simulated eight-speed mode, and the transmission routes power through the automaker’s venerable all-wheel-drive layout, which also has active torque vectoring on the Ascent. The powertrain allows for up to 5,000 pounds of towing, too. The company will announce fuel economy later.
Subaru gives the Ascent premium amenities like a standard EyeSight driver assistance suite and three-zone automatic climate control. Occupants can keep their devices charged from eight USB ports throughout the cabin and a 120-volt power outlet in the rear center console. Plus, there are 19 cup holders. Inside, the Ascent comes standard with seating for eight occupants. On all but the base models, buyers can also opt for a no-cost option of a pair of captain’s chairs in the second row for a seven-person layout. A 6.5-inch infotainment system comes standard, but higher trims get an 8.0-inch display.
Subaru will offer the Ascent in base, Premium, Limited and Touring when the model goes on sale in early summer 2018. The company will build them at its plant in Lafayette, Indiana.
