Mercedes-Benz is reportedly ready to unveil the next-generation G-Class with a surprisingly broad range of upgrades over the current model.
Sources have told Drive the SUV will receive a more luxurious and spacious interior, modern driver-assistance systems, infotainment tech on par with the S-Class, and up to six inches of additional rear legroom.
Designers are said to have retained the G-Class' iconic boxy shape, but with a slightly wider stance and an aluminum ladder-frame architecture that saves around 350 pounds.
An AMG-developed turbo V8 is expected to be available from launch, delivering 415 horsepower and 453 pound-feet of torque, with a higher output tune of more than 600 ponies for the G63 edition.
Despite a clear intention to compete with luxury-focused SUVs, the next G-Class is said to be more capable off the tarmac with longer suspension travel, deeper fording depth, 360-degree cameras and steeper approach and departure angles.
The company is expected to reveal the redesigned G-Class early next year in Detroit.
