Toyota Corolla GTI Concept Rumored For Tokyo Debut
At the Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota will potentially harken back to the performance vehicles in its lineup from the 1980s and ‘90s. In addition to the concept for the new Supra, the Japanese brand will show ideas for a future Corolla GTI and a new evolution of the S-FR, according to Car and Driver citing a rumor from Japan’s Best Car.
Not only would the Corolla GTI pack a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with around 250 horsepower (186 kilowatts), but this would also be our first good glimpse of the next-generation model’s design, according to this rumor. Toyota won’t say much about the new vehicle yet, but the company will move the Corolla to the TNGA platform.
In addition, Toyota will allegedly bring a new version of the S-FR concept. It’s not clear how this iteration would be different from the earlier one. The original was a tiny sports coupe with a front-mounted engine driving the rear wheels. The rounded styling was charming, and the shape borrowed cues from ‘60s Toyota Sports 800. To make the new concept's existence even more tantalizing, Toyota allegedly has Toyota 86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada on the job of working out how to bring the S-FR to market for less than $15,000, according to Car and Driver.
While these two vehicles are only rumors for now, the debut of the new Supra concept should be a highlight of the Tokyo Motor Show. A leaked document indicates the production version would be available with BMW-sourced engines, including two tunes of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter inline six. Toyota could offers its own powerplants, too.
