Renault Alaskan revealed as brand's first one-tonne pick-up
Renault wants to be a bigger player in the utility vehicle market, especially in Latin America, and the newly unveiled Alaskan pickup marks a major step into the segment because this is the brand's first one-tonne pickup. After the debut in Medellin, Colombia, the automaker plans to introduce the truck to more South American countries and before going on sale globally.
Pickups need to look ready to work, and the Alaskan communicates its ruggedness through a broad grille with horizontal slats. A stylized skid plate suggests to buyers that the truck can handle being off-road. The design is quite similar to 2015's Alaskan concept. Shown here as a double cab, the model is also available in single and chassis cab configurations and with short- or long-bed bodies.
To carry whatever owners want, Renault gives customers multiple engines to consider. The company's biturbo 2.3-litre dCi diesel four-cylinder is available with 160 or 190 horsepower. Depending on the market, buyers can also choose a 160-hp 2.5-liter gasoline-fueled four-cylinder or a 2.5-liter diesel. The engines can hook up to a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic, and they can send power through rear- or all-wheel-drive powertrains. For extra traction, there’s an available electronic rear differential, and a mechanical locking rear differential is optional in case of really slippery situations.
When not at work, the Alaskan should be comfortable for hauling the family, too. The truck’s available amenities include heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a seven-inch navigation system. A 360-degree camera system should also help with tight maneuvers.
