Reader envisions 2018 Honda CR-V based on spy shots
Studying vehicle design, M1 reader Huang likes to draw sketches and come up with renders of various cars on a daily basis. After seeing our spy photos of the next-generation Honda CR-V, he decided to work on a speculative render based on the camouflaged prototype caught testing in United States last month.
Seeing as how the new Civic looks substantially sportier than the old one, it seems the 2018 CR-V will follow the same route and will adopt a more dynamic appearance. Larger than the current model, Honda’s new compact crossover could have very much in common with the attached render which shows a bolder front fascia featuring an angular grille and sharp, Acura-like headlights.
Beefier wheel arches make the 2018 CR-V appear more grown up, while the rear end is home to a new take on the model’s signature vertical taillights. All of these modifications should make the fifth-gen Honda CR-V look more upscale and we are expecting the interior to match the outer skin by becoming more refined with premium touches.
Speaking of the interior, the car’s increased footprint will pay dividends in terms of cabin space and rear passengers will likely benefit from additional legroom. That will be possible by increasing the length of the wheelbase from the current 103.1 inches (2.61 meters) to somewhere in the region of 106.3 inches (2.7 meters) like in the 2016 Civic Sedan. On top of that, a while back we heard a rumor about a possible seven-seat version which could have an even longer wheelbase.
Riding on the same platform as the new Civic, Honda’s overhauled CR-V will likely use the same turbocharged 1.5-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine. While the latest Civic will get a six-speed manual gearbox for the 2017 model year, it’s too soon to say whether the CR-V will also get it as an alternative to the CVT.
As you would imagine, front-wheel drive is going to be standard on the next-gen crossover, but an optional AWD setup will be available at an additional cost. A hybrid derivative could join the lineup later during the car’s life cycle to go head to head with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.
Honda isn’t saying a word about when the new CR-V will be out, but most likely the fifth generation of the compact crossover is scheduled to be launched next year as a 2018MY.
