BMW 8 Series Coupe planned for 2020?
A new report indicates BMW has plans to resurrect the 8 Series for a new flagship model scheduled to arrive around the end of the decade.
According to insiders at BMW’s research and development center in Munich, the company is currently evaluating whether the 8 Series should have a two- or four-door coupe layout. The former is being envisioned as a direct adversary for the Mercedes S Class Coupe and could also spawn a cabriolet version. If the Bavarians will go for the four-door version, it will apparently be a bigger and more luxurious 6 Series Gran Coupe “nobler in appearance.”
Regardless of body style, the 8 Series revival will be a technological tour de force and will be largely based on the latest 7 Series which rides on the new CLAR platform. It will get the best BMW has to offer and it will be manufactured at the company’s factory in Dingolfing, Germany from 2020.
A decision concerning whether the high-end coupe will have two or four doors is expected by 2018 and chances are that year there’s going to be a concept to preview the production model.
The Gran Lusso Coupe concept unveiled back in 2013 at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este was basically BMW’s way of saying the company can whip up something more luxurious than the 7 Series. It remains to be seen whether the future flagship model will have anything in common with the concept designed in collaboration with Pininfarina.
